Lace and local history

Today me and Simon wandered around Wardown Park Museum, Luton. They currently have a lace making exhibition which was very interesting.
I always considered lace to be difficult to make, but the displays showed how it’s done and I had a go using one of the displays.  I have to say, I got quite lost following a simple braid pattern!

There were two dresses on display and i had a real close inspection at the quality of the sewing and the techniques used. I could barely see the top stitching on one of them.

The other dress was lovely too and they both featured handmade lace.

Also on show were a few vintage notions and needles.

I like finding sewing related stuff when I’m doing something unrelated. It always reminds me how much of a history fashion and dressmaking have, and makes me think about how much things have changed.
